Waymo's S2 releases report cumulative operational mileage, including travel without passengers. S2 cells are an observed reporting footprint, not an official service-area boundary. Census layers are spatial estimates for residents within that footprint; they do not describe Waymo riders or individual exposure.

RO = Rider-Only. Waymo uses Rider-Only miles for miles driven in fully autonomous service with no human driver behind the wheel. These are not all Waymo vehicle miles and can include both passenger and non-passenger travel within Rider-Only operations.

Waymo VMT Exposure

Population share shows the racial and ethnic composition of residents in the S2 footprint and is independent of Waymo activity. Waymo VMT exposure shows how Rider-Only miles are distributed across those same groups based on where people live: each S2 cell's RO miles are allocated according to that cell's estimated resident composition. If VMT exposure share is higher than population share, Waymo activity is more concentrated in places where that group lives than population distribution alone would predict.

This is a place-based exposure comparison, not rider demographics. The population bar is the benchmark: if RO mileage followed resident population exactly, the two bars would be equal.

Census context methodology

Resident characteristics use 2024 ACS 5-year block-group estimates joined to 2024 TIGER/Line block-group geometry. Population and race/ethnicity counts are allocated into S2 cells by polygon-overlap area. Income is a household-weighted average of contributing block groups' median household income. These are contextual estimates for residents in the published S2 footprint, not rider demographics, crash-victim demographics, or person-level exposure.
